What is a hand fracture?

A hand fracture is simply another term for a broken bone or bones in your hand.

What are the symptoms of hand fractures?

Because we use our hands so frequently and in so many ways, a broken bone – even a small one – can cause an array of symptoms that can range in severity. Some of the most common symptoms associated with hand fractures include:

  • Decreased range of motion
  • Stiffness
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising or discoloration
  • Coolness or tingling in the fingers when blood vessels or nerves are involved
  • Deformity, such as a crooked or “out of place” finger or misaligned joint

How is a broken hand diagnosed?

Examination begins with a review of your symptoms and the exercise that caused or beat your symptoms. A physical examination can help assess indicators like tenderness and pain, and x-rays or other diagnostic imaging tests provides opinions of other buildings and the bones within your hand to find out whether one or more bones could be broken.

How are hand fractures treated?

A broken hand requires specific therapy as a way to assure perfect recovery. when healing is reduced and specially in some cases, joints may develop arthritis in the years following a break. The treatment that’s utilized will depend on the location of its intensity along with the break. Sometimes, splinting maybe enough to secure the injured area so that it can recover as well as the bones may “knit” together, but often, a cast will need to be worn, at the least through the initial period of recovery, to stop action that could cause poor healing and long-term disability. You will need to undergo therapy or use stretches at home to assist regain flexibility and power once therapy is full.
